Muriel’s Jackson Square (Prints)
Muriel’s Jackson Square (Prints)
Muriel's has been at the center of New Orleans' history from its founging. In 1718, New Orleans was founded by Jean Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville. A member of the Bienville expedition, Claude Trepagnier, was awarded the land where Muriel's is now located and he constructed a cottage on the land.
Around 1745, Jean Baptiste Destrehan, Royal Treasurer of French Louisiana Colonies, bought the property and built a mansion befitting his position. In 1776, Pierre Phillipe de Marigny purchased the palatial home. The Great New Orleans Fire on March 21, 1788 damaged part of the mansion. Mr. Pierre Antoine Lepardi Jourdan purchased the property from Marigny and restored the property to its former grandeur. Unfortunately, Jourdan gambled and lost his beloved home in 1814. Overcom by the horror of his loss, Jourdan took his own life on the second floor where the Seance Lounge is now located before he had to turn over the property. It is said that Jourdan's ghost is the resident ghost.
