The mansion at 1239 First Street is often referred to as Anne Rice’s Rosegate House. It’s called Rosegate because of the rosette pattern of its fence. The house, historically known as the Brevard Clapp Wisdom house, is a spectacular neoclassical but has borrowed widely from multiple architectural styles. Its Italianate flourishes, Greek revival colonnades, and a hexagonal windows exude a pastiche of pronounced elegance that matches the other luxury estates of the Garden District. Anne created the world of Mayfair Witches and this amazing home with its huge, with its gnarled Live Oak in the front, served as an inspiration and a story element.
