Trustee’s Garden, the first public agricultural experimental garden in America, was located in the area where The Pirates' House now sits. Around 1753, the experimental garden was no longer needed and the area was developed with houses and an inn. The inn, hardly a block from the Savannah River, became a meeting point for pirates and sailors from around the world. The inn prospered but as time moved on, the inn fell on hard times. It wasn't until 1945 when the inn was slated for destruction that Mrs.Hillyer, wife of the owner of Savannah Gas, along with other women started the restoration of Gen. Oglethorpe's dream. The Pirates' House was saved and is now a popular restaurant for tourists and residents alike. Acrylic on Canvas, 16 in. x 20 in.
