In 1860, construction began on Longwood Plantation but was halted in 1861 when the Civil War began. When the war was announced at Longwood, the craftsmen dropped their tools (which is where they were left for years until only recently and fled home to Philadelphia, PA.
This massive Moorish Revival home is the largest octagonal house in the U.S. The original plan called for 32 rooms, 26 fireplaces, 115 doors, and 96 columns. Only 9 of the 32 rooms were ever finished and those are all on the lower level/basement of the home. That’s where the family lived for the rest of their lives. In 1968, Nutt family sold Longwood to Pilgrimage Garden Club of Natchez; in 1969 Longwood was named as a National Historic Landmark and was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
